SOUTH BEND -- Studebagels and South Bend Chocolate Co. plan to finalize Wednesday a joint venture that will both expand the product line at Studebagels and provide the local chocolate company with a new location near the University of Notre Dame.

No name change is planned, however, and the steamed bagels that are both served in the South Bend restaurant and shipped to customers across the country aren't going anywhere.

In fact, beyond a fresh coat of paint and new extended hours, regular customers probably won't notice many immediate changes at Studebagels, located at 1801 South Bend Ave., at the Campus Shoppes neighborhood center.

"For the past six months or so, I've been hunting for a midtown location," said Mark Tarner, president of South Bend Chocolate.

"I was looking at locations between Granger and Eddy Street Commons," he said. "Martin's (Super Markets) carries bagels and Einstein (Brothers) has bagels, and there's coffee competition in the area. But there's not a local coffee shop option any more near Notre Dame."
