After several car crashes at the Logansport intersections with the Hoosier Heartland Highway spurred public outcry, the Indiana Department of Transportation has agreed to conduct a formal review of the interchanges.

State Sen. Randy Head, R-Logansport, requested the review, citing the potential safety issues that may surround the intersections at Burlington Avenue and U.S. 35 North on Logansport's southwest side.

Multiple cars have crashed at those intersections since they opened last fall. Other drivers have reported several cars running the stop signs posted there, too.

"The Heartland interchanges are difficult to navigate and can be dangerous," Head said in a press release. "My hope is that INDOT's review will result in some form of traffic control to allow safe and smooth navigation for all drivers."

Head requested the intersection review before the rollover crash that happened early this week on Burlington Avenue, according to the release. However, Head said in the release that the crash illustrated exactly why he thought the intersection needed work.

INDOT is currently collecting data on speed limits and crash history involving all the roads that are part of the Logansport interchanges with the Hoosier Heartland Highway, the release indicated. It's unclear how long data collection may take or what outcomes could result from the review.
