Hamburger University gives managers at McDonald’s an opportunity to learn about business leadership. Employees receive coaching, do virtual collaborations and attend training classes both at a regional level and at the university in Oak Brook, Ill.

And now attendees — no matter where they live — can take those credits in the management development program and use them toward degrees from Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity of corporate America and higher education working together,” said Jeff Pittman, Ivy Tech vice president for corporate college and online education. “I just think it’s a big win.”

Pittman said this is the first large partnership of its kind for Ivy Tech, and called it a “crosswalk from corporate to credit.” He said the McDonald’s courses can transfer to the business administration and general studies programs. Up to 21 credit hours can transfer to an Ivy Tech associate degree and up to 15 can go toward a technical certificate.

“If you take all the hamburger classes, you’re a third of the way to a degree,” Pittman said.
