The folks up in the Bloomington area who have long fought against Interstate 69 running through the state’s university city have a brand new complaint — they aren’t getting their sleep, thanks to construction noises on the Evansville to Indianapolis highway. Now we’ve heard it all.

Opponents of the highway have resisted construction of the highway anywhere near their community — in court and in public opinion — but that hasn’t stopped the state from forging ahead on construction of the highway on the Crane, Ind., to Bloomington stretch of the highway.

Tom Tokarski, a leading opponent of the highway, said residents contacted the sheriff to see what he could do about construction crews working at night. Tokarski said resident can’t sleep and go to work tired. He said INDOT is putting the health and safety of the citizens at risk for the sake of an arbitrary timeline and not considering the quality of life of citizens.

As it is, Indiana state highway officials are suing Monroe County over a new noise restriction they say could delay completion of that section of Interstate 69.

We know that highway opponents would be satisfied if the highway were never completed in Monroe County. But that is not going to happen. The highway will be finished to the benefit of most Bloomington residents, and they might as well just get out of the way. Indeed, the sooner the highway is finished, the sooner they can get their sleep.
