MUNCIE – The city of Muncie has been notified it has received a sought-after $2.8 million in federal funds to remove blighted houses in local neighborhoods.

Muncie officials were notified late Thursday morning they were part of the latest round of the Hardest Hit Fund Blight Elimination Program.

“This is just another step in the growth of our community and a rebranding of our community,” Mayor Dennis Tyler told The Star Press.

Tyler said the city will use the money to focus on 154 blighted properties in 16 different neighborhoods.

The money is part of a program overseen by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority. A total of $75 million is being distributed in six rounds of funding statewide. Other Indiana cities have received funding in recent months and more are expected to be announced.
