Staples in Seymour is one of more than 200 of the office supply chain’s stores set to close by the end of 2015.

Store manager Tim Shepherd confirmed the news Thursday, saying the store will close next month.

“Sept. 13 will be the last day,” he said.

Company representatives would not say how many employees in Seymour would lose their jobs, or if they would be offered different positions within the company.

“Unfortunately, we are unable to provide answers to those questions,” said Kaitlyn Reardon, Staples public relations specialist.

She also would not answer questions about what will happen to the 23,640-square-foot building at 1710 E. Tipton St. The 2.11-acre site housing the store is located in a busy retail area near Home Depot, Walmart and Applebee’s.

The company announced in March its plan to cut costs and become more efficient by focusing on Internet sales instead of brick-and-mortar stores.

Nearly half of its sales are generated online, company officials said.

The plan includes closing up to 225 stores across the country in an effort to save about $500 million. Staples, based in Massachusetts, operates 1,846 stores in the United States and Canada and is the nation’s largest office-supply company.

Dozens of Staples stores have closed in the past year.

“We continually evaluate our store performance to ensure we’re operating the business in the best way,” Reardon said. “As customers shift online, we are taking aggressive action to right-size our retail footprint.

We are committed to providing great service and every product businesses need whether it’s in-store, online or through mobile.”

Staples opened March 25, 2000, in Seymour on property the Framingham, Massachusetts-based company purchased for $600,000, according to property tax assessment documents.
