She didn’t want to talk.

Sitting with her knees hugged to her chest, Lucy snapped when Jayla asked about last night.

“I don’t want to talk about it, OK?”

“I didn’t know I was pushing buttons,” Jayla responded cautiously. “Listen, you don’t have to tell me anything, but I’m always here to listen if you want to talk.”

It wasn’t that Lucy didn’t like Jayla — she barely knew her. It was Welcome Week, and the two Indiana University freshmen had just met. Last night there was an off-campus party, and things went further than expected between Lucy and another freshman, named Joe.

“I didn’t want him to think I didn’t like him; I just wanted things to stop where they were,” Lucy said.

“That makes sense. Did they stop?” Jayla asked.
