An ambulance provider which has a contract with Wayne County is discontinuing operations in several Indiana counties, a statement issued Monday by Rural/Metro said.

The Reporter-Times newspaper in Martinsville first reported a meeting between officials in that city and Rural/Metro, in which the company reportedly told the city it will be leaving central Indiana, while keeping some of its locations in southern Indiana.

Wayne County Board of Commissioners President Denny Burns on Monday afternoon said the county has not had any conversation with Rural/Metro about the company's plans and how it will affect operation in Richmond and Wayne County.

"We have a contract with them for $48,000, and that's all I know at this point," Burns said. "I am going to talk with (commissioner) Ken Paust and see if he can set up a meeting with them tomorrow so we can sit down with them and talk about what's happening.

"We are just hearing these things, too."
