After much public outcry and several accidents — now including a fatal crash on Sunday — the Indiana Department of Transportation has made detailed plans to install improved signage at the Logansport interchanges along the Hoosier Heartland Highway and Ind. 25.

In a letter to State Sen. Randy Head, R-Logansport, INDOT commissioner Karl Browning reported INDOT will install two “stop ahead” signs and two oversized stop signs with flashers at two intersections.

One set of signage will be installed on the westbound U.S. 24/U.S. 35 ramp at the intersection of Ind. 29, and the second set on the eastbound 24/35 ramp at the intersection of Burlington Avenue/Ind. 329, according to a press release from Sen. Head's office.

Additionally, INDOT will move the stop bars closer to the intersections to allow for better sight distance.

"With the occurrence of yet another fatal accident over the weekend, it's clear that there is no time to waste in installing the new signage at the Logansport interchanges,” Head said. "I thank INDOT for conducting the traffic study and I'm hopeful the new plans will increase safety and ease travel for all drivers."

In July, Head requested the review, citing the potential safety issues that may surround the intersections at Burlington Avenue and U.S. 35 North on Logansport's southwest side.

Since the roadway opened last fall, multiple vehicles have crashed and drivers have reported several cars running the stop signs posted there, too.

"The Heartland interchanges are difficult to navigate and can be dangerous," Head said in July of requesting the review.

A timeline for installation of the new signage was not available.
