SOUTH BEND — Although unofficial, early numbers indicate about 63.6 percent of students who enrolled for the first time in fall 2013 at Indiana University South Bend are enrolled to return this fall.

That would be about a 5 percent improvement over the retention rate last fall for returning second-year students, IU South Bend Chancellor Terry Allison said Friday during an all-campus meeting for employees. Classes start Monday at the South Bend campus.

Despite the apparent success at retention, early numbers also show an estimated 3.1 percent decrease overall in the number of credit hours students have enrolled for this semester, Allison said. Freshman, sophomore and transfer enrollment are up, but total credit hours are down, which means reduced revenue for the campus.
