It’s only a few weeks into his freshman year, but Anthony Ford said he’s found a family on campus. On a campus of thousands, he said it’s comforting to know there are a few hundred fellow Groups Scholars.

“We look out for each other,” he said.

The longstanding program — established in 1968 — helps underrepresented minority students who are first-generation college students attend Indiana University. This year, about 290 freshmen started the program.

In the past, the program provided funding for just freshman year, and resources such as advising were throughout a student’s college career.

But thanks to a reorganization of resources, program leaders announced financial help for Groups Scholars for four years of college — starting this academic year for all students in the program, not just freshmen.

“This is about access and affordability for first generation,” said Mary Tourner, director of the Groups Scholars Program.
