In the interest of consistency, the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville has banned deliveries of flowers and balloons to all of its schools.

Superintendent Michele Moore said most schools in the district already had this policy in place, but this change was to make the policy uniform across the district.

She said a local florist came to the district and asked them to develop a consistent policy. Moore said there were plenty of meetings on the topic, but the district thought eliminating those deliveries was the best policy.

“After much discussion, the administrative team felt that no deliveries at school would be the least disruptive to the educational environment,” Moore said.

Moore said there were plenty of reasons for the change. She said allergies played a role, as well as logistics.

“With many different students with various allergies, both latex and plants, as well as the issues of how to get the deliveries home on the school bus, we believe the policy is best,” she said.
