INDIANAPOLIS | Tony Bennett, the Republican former state superintendent of public instruction, has paid the $5,000 fine imposed in July for ethics violations associated with his unsuccessful 2012 re-election campaign.

The State Ethics Commission on Thursday approved its final report on Bennett's misdeeds and confirmed the former schools chief paid his fine.

Bennett previously admitted to the commission that he violated state ethics rules by failing to give himself permission before using state resources for campaign purposes.

State officeholders generally are not subject to prohibitions on state employees engaging in political activity on state time.

But Bennett failed to rescind his signature on a department policy barring political activity before using state computers for campaign scheduling and fundraising
