Purdue University is one of 11 major public research institutions to form an alliance aimed at ensuring more low-income and first-generation students can earn a college degree.
The goal of the University Innovation Alliance is for member institutions to share measurable and proven methods of helping disadvantaged students succeed, said Purdue President Mitch Daniels.
"One of the most important national priorities we have to have is to generate millions more college graduates in America than we are on track to have," he said.
"That will not happen if we don't become much better at recruiting and enabling to succeed low-income and first generation students who are going to be demographically a much bigger part of the country."
It is imperative to make higher education accessible and attainable for more Americans, Daniels said.
"The nation will slip economically and in terms of basic citizenship if we don't become better educated," he said.
