– The statistics that flooded the State Commission on Improving the Status of Childrenon Wednesday got more depressing each minute.

The group is studying Indiana’s dismal infant mortality rate, which is the number of children out of each 1,000 live births who don’t reach their first birthday. Some figures:

•Indiana’s 2012 infant mortality rate is 6.7. It was only the second time in more than 100 years it has dipped below 7.

•Two-thirds of all deaths under the age of 18 are infants.

•One baby dies every 13 hours in Indiana.

The good news is that Hoosiers will see a $1.3 million public awareness campaign on infant mortality starting in November.
