Today is the last day of operations at Echelon Furniture in Gas City, Mayor Larry Leach said he was informed this afternoon.
Munir Hussain, president of Echelon and Munire Furniture in New Jersey, said Munire filed for bankruptcy protection in New Jersey yesterday and he expected that Echelon would do so in Indiana, Leach said.
No one could be reached for comment at Munire or Echelon by phone or at the Gas City factory Friday afternoon, when two cars were in the parking lot.
Leach said he was unsure what may have gone wrong, adding that Echelon produced a "Cadillac" product.
"It's a sad day for me and for Gas City," he said. "We'll bounce back."
