SOUTH BEND -- It's almost hard to remember the woods and largely undeveloped property that once bordered the southeast end of the University of Notre Dame campus.

As cliché as it sounds, what a difference five years can make.

Given the fact that the first phase of construction at Eddy Street Commons was a large, complicated and expensive project that broke ground at the beginning of the worst economic downturn in decades, university officials are thrilled the developer is moving close to completion.

So close, in fact, that phase two discussions are now under way.

The full-service hotel that has been slow to materialize on Angela Boulevard is apparently moving forward very quickly.

"Now that we're on our way with the hotel, it (phase two) has our full attention," says Greg Hakanen, Notre Dame's director of asset management and real estate development.

Notre Dame owns the 25 acres and leases the land between Angela and Napoleon Boulevard to Kite Realty Group of Indianapolis. Kite has served as the phase one project manager and developer of the $200 million, mixed-use campus town project.
