SOUTH BEND —  Construction of a new 17,000-square-foot batting facility at Four Winds Field will get a boost from the city in the form of tax abatement.

The $1 million facility, to be paid for by Silver Hawks team owner Andrew Berlin, will include six indoor batting tunnels, two regulation pitching mounds and an observation deck.

The facility will be located beyond the right field wall and be called “Cubs Cage,” Berlin said this week. It will be open to the public during the offseason.

The Common Council has approved an eight-year real property tax abatement that is valued at an estimated $103,256. The team will pay an estimated $143,508 in new property taxes during that time.
