An artist's rendering shows what a new Major Hospital facility will look like along Interstate 74 at Intelliplex. On Monday, the Major Hospital Board of Directors voted in favor of moving to the new facility.
It is official - Major Hospital will be moving.
The decision came as a result of a 6-0 vote Monday night by Major Hospital Board of Directors.
Over the next three years, the hospital will move from its current location on West Washington St. to the Intelliplex certified technology park along Interstate 74.
Since 2005, Major Hospital and Major Health Partners have started an exodus to the Intelliplex, opening Benesse Oncology Center, ReNovo Orthopaedic Center and UnaVie Cardiology Center and moving Major OB/GYN there also.
"The new facility will enable Major Health Partners to provide better value in the form of improved quality and lower costs to our patients," Major Health Partners CEO and President Jack Horner said.
The board approved a resolution approving the execution of a construction contract between Major Hospital and Messer Construction and authorization to execute financing and construction documents. Board member Jeff Beaty recused himself from the vote due to the fact Messer Construction will be utilizing Beaty Construction for some work.
The project comes with a price tag of $89 million, of which about $68 million makes up the construction budget.
With the decision to move forward, Major Health Partners is still seeking approval of the finances and all state and local permits.
"We should know in seven days our approval for bonds. The bond markets look good, our finances are strong and the timing is right," Horner said.
Construction on the project could begin as early as October and a 24-month construction period is expected.
Plans for a new hospital call for a 300,000-square-foot facility, connecting to Benesse Oncology Center. The new facility will house 57 physicians and 934 employees. There will be 56 single-person inpatient rooms designed around shorter patient stays. In addition, there will be 38 outpatient observation beds and expanded surgery with four operating rooms.
