AVILLA — A senior housing complex in Avilla will soon be expanding by adding new apartments and renovating existing ones, thanks for a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

According to a press release issued Wednesday by HUD, Laverna Terrace Housing will use its $3 million grant to create 31 service-enriched units to assist residents who are unable to perform at least one activity of daily living.

The Presence Laverna Terrace apartment complex is located on the 75-acre sight of the Presence Sacred Heart Home in Avilla.

It’s a non-denominational retirement and assisted living community that has served residents of Noble County and the surrounding area since 1982.

The housing unit expanded earlier this year and now offers Medicaid-funded assisted living apartments. As a HUD-sponsored apartment complex, housing can be provided to residents with pricing based on their income.

The apartments, while separate from the nursing home at Presence Sacred Heart, are all located nearby on the first floor. Each apartment comes with a call button that allows residents to summon help as needed.

The grant will be used to upgrade some of the existing apartments with more amenities and increase the level of emergency medical help available to the residents.
