MUNCIE – The Muncie Children's Museumhas received a $150,000 Museums for America grant.
The grant, from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, will be used to bring a new interactive exhibit, "Discovery Park," to life.
The process began in 2011 when 15 elementary school children participated in a Create-A-Space workshop where they were asked to design and build the exhibits based on provided ideas. Adults and educators participated in separate focus groups.
"The result of those focus groups is Discovery Park," said Barbara Schafer, grant administrator for the museum. "We wanted the kids and parents to know that we are here, at this point, because of them."
Schafer said the park will use animals, habitats and weather to expose children to educational elements of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This 2,390 square foot exhibit will emphasize "inquiry-based exploration for children from (age) 4 through 10."
