Due to tight finances and a drop in donations, the Light House Mission will not provide Thanksgiving baskets this year, a mission official announced today.

The mission at 1450 Wabash Ave. will, however, provide its traditional Thanksgiving meal in the mission dining room on Thanksgiving Day, said Tim Fagg, CEO of the Light House Mission.

The Light House Mission has been providing Thanksgiving baskets to needy families for the past 100 years.

In addition to dropping the holiday baskets, the mission is cutting the salaries of its employees by 4 percent across the board and dropping health insurance coverage for those of its employees currently receiving insurance through the mission.

Due to a drop in donations and an increase in need, the mission has been struggling financially for the past few years, Fagg said. The mission's budget has been reduced from $1.3 million in 2012 to $1 million this year, he added.

The Light House Mission, which is governed by a nine-member, volunteer board of directors, provides housing for homeless individuals and families in addition to feeding about 460 people each day.
