SOUTH BEND — Creativity and a local connection may have taken a hit, but there’s something to be said for the brand.

South Bend Cubs. Say it again: South Bend Cubs.

Kind of a nice ring to it, right? Give it awhile, it’ll catch on.

Now remember, it’s just the name of South Bend’s professional baseball franchise. It’s not like the name of the stadium got chhhhh … oh, wait, never mind. Bad example.

A dream and a guy who knows how to push the right buttons made the Cubs’ decision to align their low Class A affiliation with South Bend a reality.

Team owner and deal architect Andrew Berlin was the toastmaster at Thursday’s celebration that was cleverly cloaked as a news conference. If somebody doesn’t present him with a key to the city pretty soon, he’s going to change all the locks and have his own set made.

Good thing Mayor Pete’s getting back from Afghanistan. Berlin’s approval ratings are so high right now he could just move into the office and nobody would complain. Forget an election, it’d just be a show of hands.
