The long-awaited answer to the question of how much Purdue University President Mitch Daniels will be paid remains in limbo, but what is now less murky is whether he'll get top dollar or not.

It's a lofty goal that Daniels will have a tough time reaching, said the university's point person in evaluating Daniels' job performance.

"It's not likely he is going to get all 12 measurements or the full $126,000," Michael Berghoff, chairman of Purdue's Board of Trustees compensation committee, told his colleagues at their meeting on Thursday.

Daniels agreed to a base salary of $420,000, with $126,000 more — or 30 percent of his base — on the line in what Purdue is calling "at risk" salary. All totaled, Daniels can make $546,000, with no deferred compensation, if he achieves certain benchmarks in 12 measurements split into five categories.

Berghoff had expected to have all of the data by Thursday's meeting in order to make a definitive recommendation to the full board, but he has not yet received all the required information.

So Daniels will have to wait until the board meets again in mid-October in order to learn how well he has performed and, consequently, how much he'll be paid.
