ANDERSON – A company located at Anderson Municipal Airport is seeking a special exception from the Anderson Board of Zoning Appeals for the expansion of a hangar.

The Board of Zoning Appeals meets at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the council chambers of the Anderson City Building.

MJ Airplane Interiors has been in business since 1967 and located to the Anderson airport in 1999, Tom Newman, CEO of the company, said. Newman said the company had been located at Mount Comfort Airport from 1985 to 1999.

“We want to create more jobs and needed space for more airplanes,” Newman said. “We want to have our cabinet and machine shop in another location to be more efficient.”

Currently the company has 15 full-time employees and hopes to add another five workers in the future.

“We wanted to have space for more aircraft inside the hangar,” Newman said.

The company hopes that the 2,500-square-foot addition is completed before the end of the year.

“We have an international reputation, mostly through word of mouth,” he said.

John Coon, airport manager, said MJ Aircraft Interiors has been leasing a hangar for several years.

The cost of the hangar expansion is estimated at $100,000 and will be paid for by the company, Coon said. The expansion will cover an additional 30 by 80 feet and be 15 feet in height.

“There are no airport dollars involved in the project,” he said.

The Board of Zoning Appeals staff is recommending approval of the request for a special exception because it could provide expanded service and employment and will benefit the company, which requires additional space.

The property is zoned for industrial use.
