Residents turned out Saturday morning to help take part in painting a mural that will honor the city of Shelbyville.
What began as a concept about a year-and-a-half ago has finally come to fruition for the city of Shelbyville and Shelby County.
On Saturday morning, numerous residents braved cold temperatures and headed to the Salvation Army's gymnasium to participate in painting a community mural, which will be at installed at the future office of Mainstreet Shelbyville, 18 N. Harrison St.
Big Car, self described as a "creative community builder working to boost urban livability from an engagement-based arts and design perspective" helped create the mural.
Chris King was the mastermind of the project, according to Mainstreet Shelbyville director Brandy Coomes.
"Chis said wouldn't it be cool to do this one day. We were excited and got the ball rolling. We decided to pursue it and it has been in the works for a year-and-a-half. My main focus was to make this happen. We got a lot of public comments and we have a great community and knew it would happen," Coomes said Saturday while taking a break from painting.
King said the concept came about after he visited the Big Car's facility at Lafayette Square.
"It's really gratifying to see it all come together and we will see an amazing result in a few days. It has been a lot of work, and we have been committed to getting it done and having a nice thing for the community that they can be proud of. It was important the community had a role in this. I wanted it for our downtown," King said.
The mural is made up of panels, each approximately four feet by eight feet. Once the panels are dry, they will be installed on the exterior wall of the building on N. Harrison St.
One person who turned out for the painting Saturday morning was Shelbyville Central Schools superintendent Dr. David Adams.
"I challenged our teachers to do one project this school year. The central office and school board decided to do this project, and it is really nice to be a part of and give back to our community," Adams said.
