ANDERSON – A Hamilton Southeastern High School student, who is a son of Anderson economic development director Greg Winkler, was held without bond Tuesday in the Hamilton County Jail in connection to the fatal shooting of a 73-year-old Fishers man.
Maxwell H. Winkler, 17, was to be charged as an adult in Hamilton County in connection with the slaying of Henry Kim, 73. Kim’s body was found Saturday evening in a neighborhood park near East 96th Street and Mollenkopf Road.
Police said that Kim was reported to be an avid walker.
Greg Winkler served as the economic development director during Mayor Kevin Smith’s first term from 2003 through 2007. He was reappointed to the position when Smith was re-elected mayor in 2011.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to both families affected by this tragedy,” Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith said in a statement. “Greg is a loving father. This tragedy in no way reflects on the superior work Greg does for the citizens of Anderson. We’re awaiting information as it becomes available.”
Maxwell Winkler was first located by police in woods near 106th Street and Hawthorne Ridge on Saturday, police said. The spot is near Winkler's home and about one mile from the site where Kim's body was found.
Late Monday, detectives executed search warrants at two locations in Fishers and collected items believed to be related to the homicide, said Sgt. Tom Weger of the Fishers Police Department. Police described the weapon only as a handgun.
An autopsy determined Kim had been shot three times and also slashed across the throat, according to Hamilton County Coroner Thurl Cecil Jr. Three small-caliber bullets were removed from Kim's body, Cecil said.
On Monday, Fishers Police Department divers searched a Windermere Park retention pond. Investigators found no clues in the water, police said, but found a knife on the grounds of the park. Police have not said whether the knife was believed to have been involved.
