JEFFERSONVILLE — The Jeffersonville Public Arts Commission is issuing its first of many calls for entries this year to help produce public art.

The project is for utility box beautification, calling artists to submit two-dimensional drawings to be painted on utility boxes throughout all six of Jeffersonville’s city council districts. This second round of painted utility boxes will join the boxes downtown that have been decorated.

The theme is “momentum” and submissions must be literal, metaphorical or abstract interpretations of this theme.

According to the call for entries overview, this project “transforms these ‘necessary’ utilitarian objects into works of art to enhance the visual landscape.”

The Public Arts Commission, Jeffersonville City Council, Jeffersonville Board of Public Works and the Jeffersonville mayor’s office will choose 10 boxes around the city for the project.

Artists can submit up to three designs for review for each box. Design templates must be altered to fit the boxes’ various sizes.

Submissions are due April 3 and winning entries will be chosen by a selection committee and announced April 17. Winning artists must be available to paint the boxes during the weekend of June 5-7.

Winners will also receive a $300 prize.
