SOUTH BEND -- Two former University of Notre Dame athletes have made a $5 million gift to endow the women's basketball head coaching position, long held by Muffet McGraw.

It's the first endowed coaching position in Notre Dame history, the university announced today.

The gift was made by Karen Robinson Keyes, a standout player for Notre Dame from 1987 to 1991, and her husband, Kevin Keyes.

The head coaching position now will carry the title Karen and Kevin Keyes FamlyHead Women’s Basketball Coach.

Karen Keyes earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Notre Dame. She was the Midwestern Collegiate Conference player of the year as a junior and senior and finished as the program’s career scoring leader. She is currently the head women’s basketball coach at Ridgewood (N.J.) High School.

Kevin Keyes was a Notre Dame varsity tennis player and is now the president and a member of the board of directors of Annaly Capital Management.
