CHARLESTOWN — St. Catherine Regional Hospital in Charlestown has closed it doors.

The hospital, which filed for bankruptcy in 2012, was put up for auction earlier in the year, and a bid had been accepted, but agreements between entities fell through Monday before new ownership took over.

Charlestown Mayor Bob Hall said he was under the impression Tuesday morning that the transfer between ownership was moving forward, but after a 2 p.m. hearing Tuesday in the federal bankruptcy court in New Albany, it was determined the hospital would close.

“It is a sad day for the hospital and its employees,” Hall said this morning. “St. Catherine has been in existence for 39 years. It is an unfortunate situation, but we are optimistic that there will be new life at the hospital moving forward.”

Hall said the city will continue to look for new ownership at the hospital and restore medical services to the Charlestown community.
