The Indiana Hospital Association has made a clear diagnosis: Health care costs are confusing.

In an effort to increase transparency for Hoosier patients, the hospital association created a database of average health care costs across the state. The service, careINsight, allows users to search hospitals by location, see average costs for the 100 most frequent statewide diagnostic groupings and quality of overall care based on ratings of patient satisfaction, and compare costs with other local hospitals. The website can be accessed at mycareinsight.org.

At IU Health Bloomington Hospital, for example, 72 percent of patients rated the hospital a 9 out of 10 for satisfaction. At Monroe Hospital, 76 percent of patients rated the hospital a 9 out of 10.

The Indiana Hospital Association used data from 2013 hospital services to analyze average hospital charges, although not all hospitals performed services routinely enough to provide an accurate range of charges. The available average costs were determined based on data reported to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Indiana State Department of Health
