About 250 employees will lose their jobs at the Caterpillar large engine manufacturing plant in Lafayette.

Fifty full-time production workers and around 200 agency workers will be laid off by June, according to a corporate statement issued Thursday.

A slowdown in the oil and gas industry prompted Caterpillar to reduce its workforce.

“Production volumes at the facility are declining due to a decrease in orders for engines that support the oil and gas industry,” the company said.
