While the state Legislature was taking steps on Thursday to fix the contentious religious freedom law, it was too late to save the women’s tennis match between Ball State University and the University at Buffalo scheduled for Friday.

Ball State is also at risk of losing an intercollegiate debate/speech national tournament in 2016 that would be attended by about 900 students, coaches and judges.

The tennis match to be hosted by BSU was canceled because New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo banned non-essential state-funded/state-sponsored travel to Indiana, said Joe Hernandez, associate athletics director at Ball State.

“With this action, we stand by our LGBT family members, friends and colleagues to ensure that their rights are respected,” Cuomo said in a statement.

Ball State also was scheduled to host Buffalo’s women’s softball team this Saturday and Sunday.

“We’re still trying to figure something out,” Hernandez said. “We are all hopeful the state of Indiana or the state of New York will solve this problem ... It’s more up to the government at this point than us.”
