A young Spiceland resident is helping shape Indiana state law. Erin Groce met with state legislators last month in support of House Bill 1108, which would change the way the Indiana Department of Education addresses dyslexia in the classroom.

The bill would define dyslexia and require the IDOE to develop guidelines that would prepare teachers to recognize characteristics of dyslexia in their students. HB 1108 was authored by House Representative Woody Burton (R-Whiteland) and sponsored by State Senator Rodric Bray (R-Martinsville). The Indiana House passed HB 1108 at the beginning of February. Erin and her mother Heather visited the Indiana State House in late March to represent the voices of Hoosier students living with dyslexia.

"It was amazing because I was helping kids all over the state who are having the same troubles I am," Erin said. "Also, the place (the Indiana Statehouse) is very beautiful!"

"It was wonderful! Erin discussed her struggles with Senator Bray and House Rep. Burton, the sponsors of the bill," Heather said.

Erin displayed prepared a sign for the General Assembly that read, "My name is Erin. I am dyslexic. Before I found out, I used to cry in my pillow at night thinking I was stupid. Then I found out what dyslexia is and that I am not stupid! I just learn differently! Please vote for this bill!" Senator Bray quoted Erin's sign during his speech before the Senate vote on HB 1108.

The State Senate unanimously passed the bill March 26 and sent it back to the House with attached amendments. If the House passes the bill again, it will go to Governor Mike Pence to be signed into law.
