INDIANAPOLIS | Three Northwest Indiana judges are sharing in $242,911 awarded Monday by the Indiana Supreme Court to 19 counties in support of family court improvement projects.

Lake Superior Judges Elizabeth Tavitas and Thomas Stefaniak Jr. each received $20,000, and Judge Thomas Alevizos, of LaPorte County, was provided $15,000.

The grants must be used to create programs that improve the court process, in particular supporting families without attorneys, encouraging early resolution of cases or funding research into best court practices and services.

Since 1999, the Supreme Court has provided $3.5 million to encourage innovation in family courts across Indiana.
