CSX Transportation has notified the City of Crawfordsville that they have made some significant changes to their operations that should greatly reduce the likelihood of crossings being blocked in Crawfordsville.

The operational changes include a commitment to:

• Reducing the amount of rail traffic passing through Crawfordsville

• Reducing to overall length of trains passing through Crawfordsville

• Increasing the amount of locomotive power placed on trains passing through Crawfordsville

• Improving communications with trains passing through Crawfordsville to reduce signal issues

• Stricter calculations regarding the amount of weight vs. the amount of power for trains that will pass through Crawfordsville

“We are hopeful that this is an important first step in resolving this ongoing issue,” Barton said. “Stalled trains pose a significant threat to public safety and cause considerable damage to the local economy.”

City officials will monitor the effectiveness of these steps and continue pushing for long-term solutions from the Indiana Department of Transportation.
