Sculpture planned for Superior Circle in Fort Wayne

The Fort Wayne Board of Public Works on Wednesday approved a resolution allowing the city's Community Development division to begin accepting bids for three phases of construction on a gateway feature planned for Superior Circle – the roundabout located where Fairfield Avenue converges with Ewing, Superior and Wells streets. 

"It definitely provides kind of a special gateway entrance both into the riverfront district and Wells Street, as well as the St. Francis campus," said Pam Holocher, deputy director of the city's Planning and Policy department.  

Holocher said the piece was designed by local artist and former architect George Morrison, who has done other pieces of public art for the city in the past. His previously commissioned work includes the Sister Cities Sculpture at Fort Wayne International Airport. 

The sculpture planned for Superior Circle will consist of 42 metal poles ranging from four to eight inches in diameter, the tallest of which will extend 30 feet above the ground. The poles – colored green, red, white and blue – will anchored vertically to the roundabout, which will feature ivy ground cover.
