La PORTE — After nearly six months on the back burner, the La Porte City Council has finally passed the mayor's Complete Streets program.

Just barely.

During the meeting of the La Porte City Council on Monday, members voted 4 to 3 (with councilmen Roger Galloway, Joe Mrozinske and David Schmitt casting the dissenting votes) to approve the mayor's complete streets program for non-motorized transportation initiatives in the city.

According to Mayor Blair Milo, the program is more of a philosophy encouraging officials to consider non-motorized transportation whenever developing a transportation project. This included looking at shared-use roadways, bike paths alongside streets and various safety aspects to take pedestrian road use into account.

She said such a program would also give the city an edge when competing for federal grant money.

She originally proposed the idea on Dec. 1, 2014.
