Daviess County and Washington took what officials believe will be a major step toward development along the I-69 corridor today by starting construction on a project on the city's east side.

State, local and national representatives were on hand to break ground on a new $10 million warehouse and railroad cross dock facility near the U.S. 50 and I-69 interchange. The 40,000-square-foot facility is located on a 23-acre plot on the west side of I-69 and could be expanded to as large as 80,000 square feet.

The project by the Daviess County Economic Development Corp. is being built to help accommodate some planned industrial expansion in the county and potentially attract additional business and jobs to the area.

The new railroad cross-dock facility will allow for the direct loading of semitrailers and railroad cars. It will connect companies to the east-west CSX line. The new supply chain is expected to help increase the efficiency of companies like Grain Processing Corp. and Alliance Barrier Films.

The project is being funded from a TIF district established in 1999 that helped bring GPC to the community.

"This project represents the continued fulfillment of a vision that will help drive regional economic growth and job creation for the people of Washington, Daviess County and beyond," said Washington Mayor Joe Wellman. "Many officials, professionals and community leaders have worked and continue to work together to capture the opportunities afforded by I-69."
