GOSHEN — Goshen College will now hire and offer benefits to individuals in same-sex marriages.

The Goshen College Board of Directors announced Monday, July 20, that it has updated its non-discrimination policy to include sexual orientation and gender identity under the list of protections.

While the college could previously hire individuals who were attracted to people of their same sex, those employees were expected to remain celibate, according to previous reporting by The Elkhart Truth.

The decision to update that policy was announced Monday in a news release and came after a weekend meeting of the board.

The board also consulted with the Mennonite Education Agency Board of Directors, which serves as a sort of middleman between Mennonite schools and the Mennonite church as a whole.
