Fayette County has now received its first economic development payment as part of its agreement with a Florida-based wind energy company.

County commissioners during their regularly-scheduled meeting Tuesday morning announced that their first economic development payment of roughly $52,000, from NextEra Energy Resources, as part of the tax abatement agreement the parties entered into with the Whitewater Wind Farm project, had been received by the county.

There had been questions from residents, to county government, on why the payment had not been received as of the date stipulated in the contract, which was slated for June 1 of this year.

"It was brought to our attention that payment had not been made," said Commissioner Frank Jackson. "I contacted (Larry) Keller, who contacted representatives of NextEra, and as of last Friday, the payment has been received."

Where those funds will go, and what to, is yet to be seen, Jackson added, as the county will have to come up with a specific ordinance which specifies what the funds will be used for.

"They're kind of in limbo as far as their classification," Jackson said.
