This summer, 14 Indiana University students took on internships to make their campus a more sustainable place to live.

Annabella Habegger is one of the students in the IU Internship Program in Sustainability. She’s working to get a bachelor’s degree in digital art and worked this summer with the Hoosier to Hoosier community sale.

“One of our main goals is to divert items from landfills,” she said, walking through The Warehouse, a community gathering place on South Rogers Street in Bloomington, where the sale will take place.

Habegger has been interning with the H2H program, which is a reuse initiative that allows unwanted items from residence halls to be collected in the spring, sorted through during the summer, and resold at low prices at the beginning of the fall semester. The IU student walked past hundreds of items being stored in The Warehouse, items that will be displayed for sale on Aug. 22.

According to Habegger, roughly 45 tons of clothing, electronics, accessories, furniture and more were donated in last year’s sale, and everything was either sold or donated to local groups. She said the sale generated about $34,000.

“It’s really eye-opening for all the interns,” she said.
