The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Friday it will be granting further financial aid to three Lake Erie border states in hopes of improving water quality in the western basin and combating the invasive algae bloom plaguing the lake.

The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will invest $5 million to help Ohio, Michigan and Indiana farmers reduce the nutrients entering the watershed, a main source of the algae, according to a news release. This most recent investment from the government follows $7.6 million in financial assistance already given this year for producers in the Western Lake Erie Basin.
