SOUTH BEND — A national retailer is leaving South Bend’s south side.

New Jersey-based Bed, Bath & Beyond plans to close its store at Erskine Village on Nov. 1, according to store employees.

A sign on the front door indicates the Erskine location is closing and that a clearance sale is underway.

The 28,000-square-foot home goods store opened its doors in 2005 at 1290 E. Ireland Road, joining other national retailers, including Kohl’s, Target, Old Navy and DSW Shoe Warehouse.

Bed, Bath & Beyond will continue to operate its Mishawaka store at 5802 Grape Road.

The company only commented that its lease at Erskine Village was expiring.

This is the second time a major national retailer with a Grape Road presence opened a second store on South Bend’s south side and later closed that South Bend location.

In 2007, Circuit City closed its short-lived location at Erskine Village. The entire chain later closed.

At the same time Erskine Village loses another major retailer, the center remains in receivership.
