Ball State University President Paul Ferguson expressed concern about enrollment during his address to faculty and staff on Friday.

“The challenge we face ... is to balance that continual concern about student debt and keeping tuition low with growing our revenue,” he said. “We’re going to have to look at a very strong and significant enrollment model. We want ... to ensure we have good solid revenue growth to ensure that the ... faculty and staff salaries are going to keep contemporary with our peers and what you deserve. I am committed to that.”

Spokeswoman Joan Todd said Ball State won’t have firm fall enrollment figures until a few weeks after the start of the semester.

On-campus enrollment declined slightly last fall as Ball State continued its emphasis on quality rather than the quantity of the student body.

On-campus enrollment, including undergraduate and graduate students, totaled 17,005 last fall, a decrease of about 1 percent from the previous fall’s enrollment of 17,225 and a decline of more than 6 percent since the fall of 2010 when enrollment reached 18,183.
