GOSHEN — Goshen College on Monday announced its voluntary withdrawal from the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, in a move related to its recent decision to allow the hiring of married gay and lesbian faculty and staff.

The presidents of Goshen College and Eastern Mennonite University, in Harrisonburg, Va., jointly announced their withdrawals from the organization.

The two colleges submitted separate letters of withdrawal on Sept. 14, according to a news release.

The withdrawals come in response to several CCCU institutions’ concerns following the July 2015 decisions by Goshen College and EMU to update their non-discrimination policies and allow the hiring of married gay and lesbian employees.
