South Bend Chase Tower owner seeks $3.8 million tax break for $30 million renovation

Washington Square Realty announced this week plans to convert the 25-story building into a new Aloft hotel with 183 hotel rooms, 83 apartment units and ground-floor retail space.

As of now, the company is seeking three separate tax abatements worth a combined $2.8 million in order to help finance the project, which is expected to create 83 full-time jobs.

The company plans to seek a fourth abatement worth about $1 million in the coming weeks.

Washington Square received a previous tax abatement on the property last April.

At the time, the company planned to spend $5.8 million to renovate the building and return the office space to Class A status. That abatement, which was never processed, will be rescinded.

Washington Square plans to divide the building into four separate parcels — hotel, parking garage, retail and residential — for the purposes of the new abatements.
