Members of the Bluffton Common Council approved 10 years of tax abatement on a new piece of machinery at Star Engineering and Machine Co., 1717 Lancaster St.

The company is putting in a new lathe at a cost of $103,093 plus another $6,520 in what is termed “accessorial charges.” The total amount for which the abatement will apply, then, is $109,613.

Tom Steffen, who represented the company at Tuesday night’s meeting, said the previous piece of equipment “gave out on us.” The new lathe is probably being constructed right now, he said.

The company employs 30 people with a payroll of $1.7 million, the abatement request said. No new jobs would be created by the new equipment, but all 30 current jobs would be retained.
