MISHAWAKA — Doctors Express closed its doors late Wednesday on the north side of Mishawaka.

This urgent care center had marked the first in a wave of clinic openings within a half mile of one another during the first half of 2013.

Doctors Express, which is affiliated with American Family Care, a Birmingham, Ala.-based national chain of for-profit urgent care clinics, opened in February 2013 at 7115 Heritage Square Drive.

With about 150 centers nationwide, the Mishawaka clinic was among those that are independently owned.

"As such, it was not our decision to close that center, nor can we specifically comment" on the reasons for the closing, said Bill Koleszar, American Family Care's chief marketing officer.

"This is the first clinic to have closed during the past two years," Koleszar continued via email. "During that same period, we have opened approximately 40 clinics that are successfully operating today and providing patients with the highest quality care and convenience."
