Thursday, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development released its Hoosier Hot 50 Jobs listing, a regional list modeled after the statewide jobs list published last year. The list contains projections of the 50 most high-wage, high-demand jobs in each of Indiana’s 12 economic growth regions over the next decade.

The top five jobs listed for the Region 8 economic growth sector — which includes Owen, Monroe, Brown, Greene, Lawrence, Orange, Martin and Daviess counties — are as follows, from hot to warm: preschool, primary, secondary, and special education school teachers; registered nurses; post-secondary teachers; general and operations manager; and accountants and auditors.

“I think the fact that the teacher shortage is being reflected on that list shows it’s a statewide concern,” said Peggy Chambers, assistant superintendent for the Monroe County Community School Corp. “We know a statewide committee is being formed. Recruiting is definitely challenging; we’re seeing fewer people go into the profession. Many are choosing not to go into teaching as a career like they used to, and that’s not a trend we’ll see change overnight.”

The rankings are based on an index of seven weighted occupational measures of growth and opportunity for Hoosiers based on Indiana’s Occupational Projections and wage data from the Occupational Employment Statistics survey. Data is analyzed by the DWD in conjunction with the United States Department of Labor.
